Peeblesshire News Column 22nd May

Hello from the Peebles COVID-19 Mutual Support Group

As we approach the two-month lockdown mark we do hope you are all comfortable, safe and keeping well.

What a week for food. The food foundation Meals on Wheels service which involved our fantastic volunteers, helped deliver 535 meals. We also helped deliver over 143 Evening meals this week from the Tontine Hotel. That is 678 freshly made meals delivered to the people of Peeblesshire.

This week and next we will also be distributing leaflets on the services for food that the local community and the council offer. All for FREE. If you know anyone that could do with a helping hand let us know. The food is fresh and great. We couldn’t do this without the great support of The Food Foundation, the Tontine Hotel and of course the greatest volunteer delivery team.

We have also distributed banners around town with the freephone number (08000096709) sitting proudly at the top. We want the support service to be available to all. Not just those with an internet connection. The support services we offer are proving very useful in easing anxious minds

We have got two request of you this week.

Firstly we want to hear about your stories of your hero volunteer. Who has helped you during this crisis? Who has gone that extra mile? It may be your daughter, grandchild or a neighbour or someone you have just come to know as part of this crises. We want you to help us find the star volunteer of the week. Ideally with their permission, a little headshot or picture of them in action would be useful.

Secondly, are your children in Primary 1 to 7 – we need them! We want them to come up with ‘My Lockdown Story’; We’d love them to share with us what they have been doing during lockdown, either as a picture or a one-page story. You choose!  Get the children to think about anything they have been doing over the past few weeks, like playing outside, reading books or learning anything new?

For the winners of the children’s competition we have 3 x £10 Caldwells ice cream vouchers kindly donated by A Gift for Peebles for the family to enjoy an ice cream delivery.
In both cases send your submissions via email it to We’ll be sharing the pictures and stories on our Facebook page, website, and in the press helping us to keep Peebles connected. Please remember to Include the first name and your age for the children competition and your full name for the Star Volunteer of the week,

Next week we will let you know about what we are doing as we move towards lockdown easing. What is this group doing to Get Peebles Talking and how you can help.

If you self-isolating due to illness or other reasons, then use the Peebles COVID-19 Mutual Support Group number 0800 009 6709 to request support. This support is available to everyone no matter what the problem is. No challenge is too big.

Finally stay safe and remember that help is just a phone call away.
